From an Old Second-Hand Machine to a Brand New Kubota

I'm enjoying the new machine, and not just for the obvious reasons.

Starting with what I could afford

When I started Otway Forestry Mulching, I did what a lot of small operators do. I bought an older second-hand machine, because that's what you can afford when you're getting a family business off the ground. And credit to it, that old thing worked its heart out and got me through plenty of jobs over the years.

It also left me filthy at the end of every day. Dust everywhere, and aircon that did absolutely nothing. You'd climb out cooked, covered head to toe, and just wear it as part of the job.

A big moment for the family business

So upgrading to a brand new Kubota skid steer, running the Fecon mulcher, is a big moment for us. It handles the tough stuff and leaves a great finish, but honestly it means just as much as a sign of where the business is at. It's grown to the point where I could invest properly in it, which after starting out on a second-hand machine feels pretty good.

The cab keeps the dust out, the aircon actually works, and I might even be recognisable when I hop out to shake your hand at the end of a job now.

The same local approach

The important part, though, is that nothing about how I work has changed. When you call, you get me. A local family business that takes the time to understand your property, works with what you've got, and looks after the land rather than just flattening it.

Different properties need different approaches, and I'd rather do the right work than the most work.

Heading into the busiest stretch of the year

I've got plenty on over the coming months as we head into the busiest stretch of the year. If you've got a property you've been thinking about, whether that's opening up an overgrown area, getting on top of invasive vegetation, or preparing before summer, get in touch and we'll have a look at it together.

We open up overgrown land.
